Aussie holiday intentions at 5-year high

Aussies are keen to get away over the next 12 months, with more people currently planning holidays than at any other point in the last five years, according to a new survey.

Roy Morgan Research found that 72 per cent of Australians intend to take a break during the next year, notably higher than the 67 per cent that said the same in March 2013. The company's Holiday Tracking Survey showed domestic and overseas holidays are in high demand, with both enjoying increases year on year.

Nearly 60 per cent of people want to spend time exploring Australia, up from 53 per cent in March 2013, while 11 per want to visit a different country, a rise of four percentage points on last year.

Jane Ianniello, international director of tourism, travel and leisure at Roy Morgan Research, said holiday intentions are on the rebound, following a slump in 2013.

"This is particularly good news for the Australian tourism industry, which saw domestic intention hit a five-year low this time last year," she stated.

"Intriguingly, there have been no significant year-on-year increases in Australians' overall sense of financial security or optimism about the future, or even in consumer confidence levels."

Ms Ianniello also claimed there is no particular demographic driving this renewed interest in holidays – it appears to be a general trend across the board.

If you are one of the 14 million Australians planning a holiday over the next 12 months, it is important you have adequate travel insurance. Whether you are staying in Australia or heading abroad, you will want peace of mind that whatever happens, you are covered financially.

Contacting a specialist insurance broker, such as Trades Insurance, will enable you to learn more about the policies available and select the right one for your circumstances.
