What is GDPR?

What is GDPR? And why am I receiving so many privacy emails?

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulations which came into in to effect on the 25th of May 2018. All companies that hold data relating to customers within the European Union must comply with these regulations. Great Britain which is soon to be a non-EU country has also enacted similar legislation so similar rules apply to client data located there.

The GDPR requires collectors of data to declare what the data will be used for, how long it will be stored and whom it will be shared with, similar to the requirements of Privacy legislation in Australia. The GDPR also requires businesses to store data so that it is not personably identifiable.

GDPR comes with significant protection for customers and heavy fines for the organisations that breach its articles.
